Abstract:
This data set consists of digital orthophoto images obtained from 1:20,000 scale black-and-white aerial photography acquired in the spring of 2000. The orthophoto files are prepared at two different scales: 1"=400' and 1"=200'. Each 400-scale image nominally covers four U.S. Public Land Survey System sections, for a total of 108 digital image files in the 400-scale data set. The pixel resolution of the 400-scale imagery is two feet on the ground, and the files contain overlap between images. A Countywide MrSID format file was prepared from mosaics of the GeoTIFF format files.

Each 200-scale image covers an area of 5,000 by 5,000 feet on the Wisconsin State Plane Coordinate System, South Zone, for a total of 592 images in the 200-scale data set. The pixel resolution of the 200-scale imagery is one foot on the ground, with zero overlap between images. MrSID format files were prepared from mosaics of the GeoTIFF format files. Each MrSID format file covers an area of one USPLSS Township. The 12 MrSID format files contain imagery beyond the boundaries of the survey township and do overlap.

All image files have accompanying "world" (.tfw or .sdw) files.

Purpose:
This data set was collected to provide an inventory of orthophoto images for use in planning and other programs in Washington County and by the Southeastern Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission for use in broad regional planning purposes.

The orthophoto images were reviewed for positional accuracy by comparison of the imagery with ground survey control features (section and quarter-section corners of the U.S. Public Land Survey System).

The 400-scale data set consists of a set of 108 black-and-white orthophoto images, with each image covering four U.S. Public Land Survey System sections. Each digital raster image file is approximately 32 megabytes in size, and is formatted in GeoTIFF (Tagged Image File Format). The pixel resolution of the images is two feet on the ground, with areas of overlap between adjacent images. The orthophoto files are named according to the U.S. Public Land Survey System township, range, and four-section area covered by the image. In addition, a number of ancillary digital files are available that complement the orthophoto image files. These include: 1) a generic ASCII-format text file containing the State Plane coordinates of the extent of the image (".bnd" file extension); 2) an ESRI-format world file containing the coordinate information used to display and register the image in ESRI software (".tfw" file extension); 3) a symbolized vector and text file containing U.S. Public Land Survey System section and quarter-section corners and lines and map legend and title information in MicroStation format (".dgn" file extension); and 4) a text resource file containing font information for display of the vector and text file (DGN file) in MicroStation format ("ortho.rsc" file name).

The MrSID (Multi-Resolution Seamless Image Database) format files were prepared from the GeoTIFF format files. The MrSID file covers the entire county and is approximately 147 MB in size. The pixel resolution of the image is two feet on the ground. The image file includes an accompanying ESRI-format "world" file (".sdw" file extension) containing the coordinate information used to display and register the image in ESRI software.

The 200-scale data set consists of a set of 592 black-and-white orthophoto images, with each image covering a 5,000 by 5,000 foot area or "tile" on the Wisconsin State Plane Coordinate System, South Zone. Each digital raster image file is approximately 26 megabytes in size, and is formatted in GeoTIFF (Tagged Image File Format). The pixel resolution of the images is one foot on the ground, with zero overlap between adjacent images. The orthophoto files are named according to the State Plane Coordinate System easting coordinate and northing coordinate, in thousands of feet, of the southwest corner of the image. Each image file includes an accompanying ESRI-format world file containing the coordinate information used to display and register the image in ESRI software.

The MrSID (Multi-Resolution Seamless Image Database) format files were prepared from the GeoTIFF format files. Each MrSID file covers one U. S. Public Land Survey Township. Each image file is between 51 and 75 Megabytes in size. The pixel resolution of the images is one foot on the ground. The image file includes an accompanying ESRI- formatted "world" file (".sdw" file extension) containing the coordinate information used to display and register the image in ESRI software.
