Washington County Earns National Transportation Achievement Award
Nearly 15 roadway miles were "swapped" implementing #justfixit 2050 Transportation Sustainability Plan

West Bend, WI - Washington County has been recognized with an Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo) for the county's work on jurisdictional transfers. The awards honor innovative, effective county government programs that strengthen service for residents.

County Administrator Joshua Schoemann announced the award in his May 8, 2019, State of the County presentation to the Washington County Board of Supervisors.

"The County Board passed and funded, without raising taxes, a 2050 Transportation Sustainability Plan," stated the county administrator, "these several jurisdictional transfers with more than half of Washington County's local governments reduced county highway miles to ensure the realization of the sustainability plan. This is an amazing achievement which allows Washington County to say #JustFixedIt."

NACo President Greg Cox said, "Counties implement innovative programs that enhance residents' quality of life every day. This year's Achievement Award-winning programs demonstrate how counties build healthy, safe and vibrant communities across America."

"This award belongs to the villages of Newburg and Richfield, towns of Trenton, Polk, Erin, Addison and Hartford, city of Hartford, and the state of Wisconsin as much as it belongs to us," added Highway Commissioner Scott Schmidt. "I have no doubt this project promoted intergovernmental cooperation and coordination in addressing shared problems and involved a significant amount of good work from good people."

Nationally, awards are given in eighteen different categories which reflect the vast, comprehensive services counties provide. The categories include children and youth, criminal justice, county administration, information technology, health, civic engagement and many more. Eight other counties nationwide received an award for transportation projects. In Wisconsin, Sheboygan County was awarded a Community and Economic Development Achievement Award.

NACo will recognize award-winning counties at its 2019 Annual Conference and Exposition July 12-15 in Clark County, Nevada. A full program summary for Washington County's jurisdictional transfer program can be found on the County's website.
