Medication Disposal
Medication Disposal
For more information on the next scheduled Clean Sweep/Medication Collection, click here .
If you are not able to come to the next Medication Collection, store medications out of the reach of children in a locked cabinet until the next event. If you are not able to wait until the next event due to the risk of accidental poisoning, overdose or diversion, dispose of the medications in the trash using the following steps:
- Add a small amount of water to the medication bottle to dissolve the pills/capsules.
- Add coffee grounds or kitty litter to the bottle.
- Put the bottle in a plastic bag and place it in the trash. Do NOT pour medications down the sink or flush them down the toilet.
Sharps Disposal
It is illegal to put sharps in the trash or with recyclables. Used sharps must be packaged in rigid puncture-resistant containers with secure lids or caps and properly disposed. Ask your doctor's office or pharmacy if they will accept properly packed used sharps. You can also look at the list of registered sharps collection stations to find a station near you.
