District Attorney - Who We Are



District Attorney:

Mark D. Bensen is a 1988 graduate of Middlebury College and a 1991 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School. Before joining the Washington County District Attorney's Office in May, 2001, he worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the Milwaukee County District Attorney's Office.  He also worked as a Federal Prosecutor and served as a Special Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Wisconsin.


Deputy District Attorney:

Stephanie Hanson
joined the Washington County District Attorney's Office in 1999. A 1990 graduate of U.W.-Madison and 1995 graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School, Ms. Hanson worked as a Judicial Law Clerk and Small Claims Mediator for the La Crosse County Circuit Court. She then clerked for Hon. Daniel P. Anderson of the Wisconsin Court of Appeals for two years before working as a Judicial Law Clerk for Justice Jon P. Wilcox of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.

Assistant District Attorneys:


Peter J. Cannon received a Bachelor's degree from U.W.-Madison in 1975, a Master's degree in 1976, and graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1979. He worked as an Assistant District Attorney in Washington County from 1979-1981, then joined the Wisconsin Department of Justice where he worked as an Assistant Attorney General from 1981-1995. During that time Mr. Cannon worked in the Medicaid Fraud, Civil Litigation, Consumer Protection and Criminal Appeals Units. Mr. Cannon rejoined the Washington County District Attorney's Office in 1995.

Mandy A. Schepper received a bachelor degree from U.W.-Madison in 2002, participated in the AmeriCorps from 2002-2003, and graduated from Marquette University Law School in 2006. Before joining the Washington County District Attorney's office, Ms. Schepper was an Assistant District Attorney in the Sauk County District Attorney's office.

Sandra J. Giernothreceived a Bachelor’s Degree, magna cum laude, from Carroll College in 2004 and graduated from Marquette University Law School, cum laude, in 2009.  While a law student, Ms. Giernoth interned with both the Washington County District Attorney’s Office and the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, and she was also an intern to the Honorable Annette Kingsland Ziegler of the Wisconsin Supreme Court.  Following graduation and before joining the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, Ms. Giernoth practiced criminal defense in southeastern Wisconsin.
